Ian Gilula is a highly accomplished artist and master craftsman whose journey in the realm of art and design began during his formative years when he traveled internationally with his family, visiting major art museums and galleries around the world. Art has consistently been the central guiding force in his life, profoundly influencing his creative path.
His passion for glass as an artistic medium ignited during his studies at Alfred University's School of Art and Design. Here, he had the privilege of learning alongside renowned fine artists and conceptual designers, providing a solid foundation for his artistic exploration. His commitment to glass art deepened as he embarked on a transformative journey to study under master glass artists across Europe, with a particular focus on the celebrated glass studios of Murano, Italy. He also enriched his understanding of glass art by studying at prestigious institutions like the Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
In the year 2000, Ian Gilula teamed up with Aaron Frankel at the University of Wisconsin to establish Elements Glass, a studio that would later find its permanent home in Portland, Oregon. It rapidly evolved into one of the largest and most influential glass shops in the United States, providing a limitless environment for Ian to push the boundaries of the glass medium. Ian is recognized for his contributions as a glass artist, and he combines his extensive understanding of sculpture and art theory to create a distinctive artistic style. His work has received acclaim on both national and international stages through exhibitions and awards, firmly establishing his reputation in modern glass art.
